How Resilient Are You?

Resilience 2

Resilience is our ability to bounce back from challenges and adversity, and adapt in order to create positive outcomes in adverse situations.

Contrary to popular belief, resilience is not an innate capacity; it can be learnt and built by anyone at any stage in their lives. While your natural ability is definitely an advantage, here are 4 pillars you can focus on, to build your personal resilience:

(i) Physical Resilience: Make sure you invest enough time and energy in ‘self care’, ie getting a good night’s rest, having a nutritious diet and regular exercise, to help your body cope with stress and perform with ease.

(ii) Mental Resilience: Build your ability to be flexible in your thinking and look for alternative solutions to the challenges you are faced with. People’s problem-solving skills are known to play a significant role in their psychological well-being.

(iii) Emotional Resilience: Acknowledge the emotions coming up for you, and use your emotional intelligence to understand what steps to take. Acknowledge your strengths and maintain a positive view of yourself throughout. Caring and supportive relationships with family and friends go a long way in building emotional resilience.

(iv) Spiritual Resilience: This is about finding meaning and purpose in whatever you are doing and having faith in the future. Mindfulness and meditation can help you center yourself in times of stress and overcome everyday challenges with equanimity.

“Out of massive suffering emerged the strongest souls; the most massive character are seared with scars.” – Khalil Gibran
